More than any place, Rome is the city in which you can find lots of obelisk which came from Egypt: it has thirteen of them. What was the use of the obelisk and the monumental colon of the Roman urban,
after pope Sisto has decided to contribute to the transportation and erection of the giant obelisk or to transfer the antic colossi, it is a history that can be seen of the transformation of Rome.
With their position which is in the center, these obelisks gives attraction to the plaza and it's connection to every other obelisk. The vertical position of the obelisk shows the intuition of the
urban pontific, (it is also followed by another column) and represents the main road of the antic city which serves as a sign that every obelisk brings you to the most major center of the city: first of all three of the major basilica, then piazze del Popolo, Colonna, Montecitorio, Pantheon, Navona, Spagna, the colli Pinciano, Quirinale, Celio. |
