Fountains
Since the Roman period the Romans represents health and power of their society by the hydraulic opera and it's beauty. Until today the fountains is still considered as a testimony that in the past there is an abundant water which you can find these fountain in every angle of the City. But it not only this City that stopped in consuming lots of water from the well before yet three hundred years ago before Christ, it was so rich of water.
During the next century from the fall of the Roman empire, Rome was occupied
and vandalized most of the time, aqueducts was destroyed in some parts and
some are gravely damaged, the population suffered much of this consequence and
the only solution to their thirst is the water in the river of Tevere and
the water source "acetose" which in that period , it is not yet polluted.
The lack of fountains was greatly felt by the people which provides water in
every angle of the City. (calculating that in the past, Urbe 212 fountains being supplied by eleven water ducts.) it was then that little by little they started to reconstruct fountains: when the pope from the Avignone recovered , Leon Battista Alberti was given the responsibility by Niccolò V to adapt the and reconstruct the original ducts; this has made some trival disscussion, that is the reason that they it Trevi
At this time the route was provided and to distribute not only to the rich
palaces to all of the populations. It was Gregorio XIII who ordered the
constructions of lots of minor fountains which is made out of marvel with
animals sculptured on it as a design.
It is actually the relationship of water and animal which is the most important characteristic of the Roman fountains. The savage feature of the fountains was born in the legend of metamorphose; the architects and the designers gave features to the hybrid, that came from the unknown : sirene-uccelli, mermaids , dragons and lizards , divine marine creatures , tritoni and sea horses, substituting the body of every living creatures and inorganic materials, trees that are taken away by the wind, stones , leaves and cascades.
Every animal has symbol: falena represents the the spirit , the flys represents the bad, eagle is for power, delfin is for faith and resurrection , worn is for sin... or just to represent the steam of the noble family that have commissioned the constitution, like the dragons and eagle as steem of Borghese (in obelisk fountain of the lateran mostra dell'acqua Paola, in Gianicolo which hides in the back niche a secret garden and in the fountain of piazza S. Pietro, in the ninfeo of Palazzo Borghese).
Rome has some of most beautiful fountains in the world, its the opera of the great sculptures and artists, it is succeeded by the renascence up to the present. Some of them are rich in decorations, while some plays with water. Some of the fountains are made for drinking, while others gives a design of an art of some buildings. Some are also constructed in remembrance of some great historical events, while some are erected in the center of important plaza in honor of the place itself .Due to different type of fountains they are divided in tree different names: Fountains of the plaza, the monsters of the water and Fountains of the buildings.
