Also known as "coclide" from the spiral of novellistic sculpture that wraps it. It has been erected in honor of the Emperor in the 113 a.C.. Remained in the place of its original positioning, Sisto V, in the 1587, limited to arise in addiction the statue of S. Peter.

It is tall, with the base and the capital, approximately 38 meters (the single column measure m 29.70). Its proportion is approximately of 8 diameters; it was raised on the public square where it rose the Quirinale hill, it is placed on a high cube-shaped pedestal adorned at the angles with 4 eagles sustaining swags and on three sides with bas-reliefs, from trophies of dachic arms.
It serves also as tomb and narrates, through a bas-relief that wraps it for 23 coils and on which the 2500 decorated figures 0.6 metres tall succeede each others along the helicoidal axis, the wars in Dacha conduct from emperor Traiano from the 101 to the 108 and from the 105 to the 107 a. C.
The Column inside is practicable where a small ambient is opened: here on a marble bench, the gold urn with the ashes of Traiano is placed starting from the 117 a.C , year of its death.
Again, to the inside part, rise a snail staircase, brighten up from 42 small windows, of 185 steps, long 0.8 m., cut in the marble, that it leads in summit to the column. In the 1162 the column, than to that time was still of property of the church of the SS. Apostles, while the chapel close to the column belonged to the feminine monastery of S. Ciriaco in via Lata, was directly placed under the protection of the Senate and of the whole Roman people: it was wanted to be guaranteed therefore that the column remained integral and not diminished and it has been decreed that every abuse had to be punished with the death and the forfeiture of goods.
