At S. Maria Maggiore.
The Column comes from the Basilica of Massenzio, also known with the ancient name of the Temple of the Peace, and was the only survivor, still in use, of the eight that had originally decorated that monument, when Paul V ordered it had to be removed in the 1613-15 to place in front of the Basilica in which he had created the Borghesian Chapel. The work was completed by Carlo Maderno (he placed on the column a bronze made statue representing Virgin Mary with Child of Guglielmo Bérthelot and constructed the fountain at the basis of the pedestal). The column, in imethian marble, is 14.30 meters tall.
