Archeological area in piazza Argentina
Archeological area in piazza Argentina: a visitor's path Archeological area in piazza Argentina: theories and lost remains Saepta Julia Address: via di Ripetta It is found under a pavilion on the left of Ripetta street. It is a monument set up in 13 a.c., in honour of the emperor Augustus to be used as sepulchre for himself and for the imperial family (27 a.c.). Originally it was an imponent construction in circular shape, rich in marbles and statues, set round with arcades and surmounted by a conical heap of soil, with cypresses, on top of which there was the statue of the emperor.
In the Middle Ages, it was transformed into a fortress, and after, it was used for diverse uses, till, in 1936, its reinstatement. In its interior there is a crypt which keeps the urns.
