"All the roads lead to Rome": this well known proverb comes from the numerous consular roads the
Romans skillfully built around the capital.
Even today they represent one of the largest and most efficient road systems which, beginning from
the city walls, link Rome with the peripherical regions as Ostia (Via
Ostiense), the Castles (Via Appia) and Fiumicino
(Via Aurelia). Ancient Roman roads finally branch off towards the different regions of Italy.
Thanks to this road system the ancient Romans succeeded in firmly controlling the centre of the peninsula, thus showing us, once more, their great competence in town planning.
